CT's end. Holiday's beginning.

Went to school early this morning to do the open-book BSTATS common tests..  If im not wrong, I finished i 35-40min.. Partly due to us having 10min reading time and partly cox its open book.
The questions were easier than expected though... Except for the probability questions that let me think and think and think whether im right or wrong... Hope im right..

The test is more of a breeze.. cox its open-book. dun dare to say hurricane.. xp

I saw my classmates goin out one by one.. I had the temptation to do this ---> ..

Cox im the bloody BSTATS modue rep, gotta wait... until the end of 1.5hrs.. After dozing off and waking up several times, time was finally up.. In front of me oredy 5 empty seats.. I looked back, and got a shock! Only Joanna [who was directly behind me] was there. The others were gone... lol

Joanna said tt she stay till the end cox the last question was brewing a storm in her brain...

Went out, saw Xijing, Xinying, and Wendy.. The others were gone lol...

Anw.. will hav camp from next mon-wed.. Hope can bring camera AND use it.. So tt can capture memories and lag ur com ma.. heheh...

OK. Before I forget. I read in an article on wednesday in The Straits Times that I think is rather meaningful...  The title said "Who says its hard to learn Chinese?" and for your info, this article is in the review section..

The 1st sentence of this article says " Some English-educated Chinese Singaporeans think and say tt Chinese is difficult to learn. That is why their own children find it hard to pick up Chinese, they say" This, in my opinion, is about parents using words to affirm their belief tt Chinese is hard to learn, which is not as the author quoted a person.

"Vili Maunula, a theoretical linguist, writes:' All languages are, to the best of our current understanding of human languages, equally suitable for conversation. No language is more expressive or less expressive than the other, neither is one language easier or more difficult"

The author's story truly shows to us that learning a language is easy, if you keep an open mind. The author's story truly shows to us that learning a language is easy, if you keep an open mind.

He grew up in a dialect-speaking home. When he first went to a Chinese school, he could not speak neither English nor Mandarin. He doesnt even know how to write his own name in Chinese or English...

He finished the 6year primary school in 5years. Quite an amazing feat, i must say. And he graduated as the top boy... He switched from Chinese-English stream. As his oral skills were weak, he was nicknamed "China-man" by his classmates.  He listened to BBC broadcasts [wow!]. read english books, attended public lectures in English and he also had Penpals which only wrote in English... [Imagine that!]

"With an open mind and effort, my English improved leaps and bounds. I topped the school in English. Much to my surprise and pleasure." All the while still improving his Chinese by listening to local and Peking Mandarin Broadcasts.

When he sat for the Chinese Senior Middle III Government exam as a private candidate, He scored DISTINCTIONS in both Chinese and English.. And he took today's equilvilant of A levels, he got DISTINCTIONS for GP and Chinese too...

To quote him
"A closed mind is a blocked mind. Things are shut out and you lose out. The best way to learn Chinese is to keep and open mind, do away with prejudice and be passionate about learning the language and culture."
Continuing with the article, MOE announced last year a list of 1600-1700 Chinese characters for Pri Sch CL. and 1800-1900 for Pri Sch HCL.  Of this two lists, 600-700 in CL and 400-500 in HCL are for word recognition only. [ You don't have to know how to write them ]

There are 52 wks in a year and 312 weeks in 6 years. If one divided 1700 and 1900 respectively by (312x7) days, CL students would only need to learn 0.78 characters a day and HCL 0.87 characters a day.. Why do pupils think its so difficult?

Eh-hem, as I say, Things are what they are because of how you think the things are. [ If you understand, that is... xp ]

Secondary school students have to know 3000 characters by sec4 for CL and 3500 for HCL. 300 are for word recognition only AND this list INCLUDES everything you have LEARNT in PRIMARY SCHOOOLLLLL.... [ ok, im too excited ]

CL secondary school students only have to learn 1400 extra characters and HCL, 1700. This is quite manageable even if school holidays are not counted...

As the article shows " It is a question about mindset. Have the right mindset and you will succeed."

"I once saw a poster of seagulls flying over a stormy sea. The caption read:' They can because they think they can.'
That gets to the heart of the matter."

And for some additional quotes from yours truly. "You cant because you think you cant." Learn from the seagulls, my readers. [ If there are any... ]  =)
